Washington, DC (June 18, 2010) — When it comes to going green, Turkish restaurant Agora, located at 1527 17th Street, NW, is doing its part in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. The 170-seat restaurant, which opened in May 2010 showcasing a selection of signature Turkish and Greek fare, is working on being green from the ground up – literally. The majority of Agora’s construction throughout the restaurant comes from materials that are recycled or reclaimed. The cement flooring and exposed brick walls throughout the space serve as architectural focal points that support Agora’s old world Mediterranean vibe and are natural conductors of heat and cold.
Furthermore, Agora’s collection of Mediterranean wines is kept in a naturally controlled temperature wine room with recycled wood racks. The beverage program at the restaurant reflects the landscapes, endemic varietals and culture of the Mediterranean regions of Turkey and Greece supporting organic and biodynamic producers. Guests can enjoy the wine in stemware that is almost as elegant as it is indestructible. The white and red wine glasses are made from a combination of recycled cork and glass and are extremely durable while very stylish.
Guests can also take advantage of Agora’s in-house water filtration system by Amore di Aqua, which provides still or sparkling water. These filtered bottled waters are complimentary to guests and Agora recycles all bottles, paper and plastic. The restaurant also only uses recycled paper for the printed menus and donates the kitchen’s cooking oil for repurposing as biodiesel fuel.
Agora is also making an effort to reduce paper waste in the restrooms by installing environmentally friendly hand dyers and asking guests to be mindful of their use of paper towels to save trees and help the environment. As part of their effort to conserve energy, Agora only uses natural light for as long as possible. This includes before opening and for the first two hours of bar operations.
Agora, which means “gathering place” in Greek brings authentic Turkish cuisine to the heart of Dupont and is designed to resemble a Mediterranean Oasis. In addition to its main dining room, Agora has plans later this summer to open a second floor addition with private seating for up to 48 guests. During the spring and summer seasons, additional seating is available as the sidewalk café at Agora can accommodate 34 guests for both the lunch and dinner service.
